The short history
What happened here?
Osman Hamdi Bey was a painter, archaeologist and museum director. He often used himself as a model and built scenes from studied costumes, architecture and objects.
The trainer carries a small drum and flute while the tortoises gather around leaves on the floor. The exact meaning is open, but the picture is often read as a satire on difficult, slow-moving institutions.
The work appeared at the Paris Salon in 1906 under a French title meaning The Man with Tortoises. It is now one of the most recognized paintings in Turkey.
